Binoculars

Binoculars can show hundreds of sky objects, and are good for viewing large star clusters and comets. However, telescopes are better for looking at planets and galaxies in detail.

The best choice for beginners is the 7x50 porro-prism. While larger binoculars can see more objects in greater detail, they are more expensive and very heavy.

Binoculars are graded by magnification (power) and aperture (diameter). For example, 7x50 means they magnify seven times and have 50mm diameter lenses. There are two types of binoculars:

Porro-prism Binoculars

Porro-prism

Porro-prism binoculars have zig-zag barrels. These are the most common type and the best choice for astronomy.

Roof-prism Binoculars

Roof-prism

Roof-prism binoculars have straight barrels. They are not as good as porro-prism binoculars for astronomy but can still show many sky objects.

Safety

Blindness can occur instantly if you look at the sun without a solar filter. The filter must cover the entire front opening, and not be cracked. Never use eyepiece filters for looking at the sun.

The reflected sunlight from the moon can also cause eye problems, so it's a good idea to use a solar filter when looking at the moon.
